Why Ivory Should be Outlawed

I hope the day comes when the sale of ivory is outlawed everywhere and the senseless killing of elephants will stop. For every ivory trinket sold that will simply sit on a shelf, a beautiful, sensitive, and very smart elephant died ... senselessly, brutally, and without any good reason.


Please ... don't purchase ivory and ask your friends to do the same. If the demand for ivory stops, then the poaching will stop. But that won't happen until people STOP purchasing ivory.


This is the story of a tiny two-week-old elephant calf who lost his mother to poachers in the Wamba area in the Samburu Tribal Area of Northern Kenya. The Kenya Wildlife Service was alerted and arrived on scene to find the mother elephant dying from multiple gunshot wounds from poachers. Sadly, the KWS veterinarian had no choice but to euthanize the mother elephant.  This little elephant should have been with his mother for several years and under her guidance and care. Instead, he had to see his mother being brutally killed and suffer needlessly before he was orphaned. He was then taken to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. The Sheldrick Orphanage is an excellent organization that I highly recommend supporting. By fostering an orphaned elephant, you are ensuring that the ele will receive the care, support, and nutrition it needs to survive.

Here's photos of Barsilinga flourishing at the Sheldrick Orphanage. Baby elephants wear blankets on their backs when young to prevent sunburn. Older elephants use their trunks to throw dirt over their backs to prevent sunburn; since the babies haven't yet learned how to do that, their handlers put blankets on them. The baby elephants grow very attached to their handlers. Now there's a job I'd love ... living with elephants!
